One week ago our office hosted a region-wide teacher institute day with professional development activities at Carbondale Community High School and at Giant City School. We enjoyed seeing so many faculty members of the 24 school districts we serve and we appreciate your attendance.
We want to express our gratitude to the many people who made this event possible. Our thanks to Supt. Daniel Booth and the CCHS administration, faculty, and staff for providing a site for the vast majority of attendees and coordinating breakfast as well as technology needs. We especially appreciate the collaboration with Ms. Lena Dierks as the CCHS lead on the event. Thank you CCHS Terriers!
Our thanks to Dr. Kristopher Mason and the Giant City School faculty/staff for the use of their facility and coordination of breakfast and training needs. Thank you GCS Giants!
We were once again pleased to have the breakfast sponsored by the School of Education at Southern Illinois University and it was great to see members of the School of Ed. on hand to greet attendees. Thank you to the Dean of the School Education, Dr. Stacy Thompson, and Associate Dean Dr. Brad Colwell. GO DAWGS!
Our keynote speaker for the event was Aaron Polansky. Aaron delivered a positive and inspiring message which included the statement that among all of the acronyms and alphabet soup of education jargon, the most important letters for us to remember when it comes to our students are "R U O K". Thank you, Aaron, for sharing your message with us.
We also want to express our gratitude to the presenters who hosted other sessions, including:
- Elizabeth Frisbie, MA, MS Ed, I/ECMH-C
- Sarah Phelps, Learning Technology Center
- Abby Schnautz, ROE 13 SEL Coach
- Mark Kuhns, Jackson County Ambulance Service
- Anna CCSD 37 faculty members Morgan Politte, Christina Van Alstine, & Josh Shearer
- ROE 30 Asst. Regional Supt. Sherri Schimpf & Johna Schullian, ROE 21
- Steven Wiseman, Rise Performance 618
- Erin Sagaskie, Almy Education Center
- Diana Rea, Asst. Supt . for Du Quoin CUSD 300 / President-Elect of the Illinois Assoc. for Gifted Children
- Charley Cass, Supt./Principal at Bethel Grade School
- Shannon Wolff, 4E Trainer, Tier One Tactical Solutions
Lastly, my thanks to our ROE team who helped on the day of the event and all of the days leading up to it. This event was coordinated and led by ROE 30 PD Coordinator Dr. Julie Bullard and our Murphysboro office team of Asst. Regional Superintendent Sherri Schimpf, Tricia Burns, Sheila Frampton, Shannon Starrick, and Megan Wece provided great help to pull this event off successfully. I must also give a special shout-out to Tricia Burns who I neglected to thank during the institute- a consequence of using my memory instead of my notes. (I ought to know better!) Thank you, ROE 30 team!
We look forward to seeing what next year holds and wish all of our districts a great remainder of the 2024-2025 school year!

We are excited to see the Murphysboro school district moving forward with efforts to incorporate scratch cooking and increase the amount of locally sourced foods used in their school meal programs. Nice work!
This effort is part of a pilot our office has helped facilitate in the Murphysboro and Cobden school districts through a Farm-to-School Grant offered through the Illinois State Board of Education.
We have partnered with Illinois-based Beyond Green Partners to provide training to cooks and spearhead the creation of a local food network.
This will be a gradual process over the next several months, but we are excited to see progress and look forward to helping share more news about the Cobden and Murphysboro programs down the road.
